LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT

Featured Items: Equal Rights Amendment

ACTION NOW:
April 27th (not 7th) is the date of the 4th annual Campus ERA Day hosted by ERA Coalition. This years event will be virtual and streamed live on facebook and via Zoom. Find out more at eracoalition.org or https://pass-the-era-today.weebly.com. In national news, the U.S. Capitol and surrounding buildings remain closed for the remainder of April with 8 capitol police officers apparently testing positive at this point. In the midst of the virus response, the White House has proposed a change to the way poverty is measured and is accepting public comment until an April 14th deadline. You can comment here. We believe changing the way poverty is defined under these circumstances is a bad idea and that, at minimum, the deadline should be extended. The Senate resolution (S.J.Res 6) to eliminate the time line now has at least 48 signers. Senator Sinema is a co-sponsor but Senator McSally is still not. Please contact McSally at 1-602-952-2410 or at https://www.mcsally.senate.gov/contact_martha and ask her to co-sponsor.

In local news, the State legislature has announced a delay of its reopening, previously scheduled for April 13th, until April 30th. Public schools have been ordered closed through the remainder of the semester (a very sad result for those scheduled to graduate).

Like every other group, we are meeting virtually and keeping in touch by internet and phone. Check out our website and facebook page for contacts and information. If you want to keep up on what AZNOW or the ERA Task Force is doing, sign up for our action alert list. We also need your donations to keep up our work. It's your equality after all.

Please continue to write to your local papers in favor of the ERA, both opinion pieces and letters to the editor. Tips for doing both and talking points are on the website.

If you are the owner of a business, please email us to say YES put me on the list and give us the contact info that you want listed. We'll send you a decal for your window so you can make your belief for equality a sales point. If you go to a business, and who doesn't, ask every one you frequent to support the ERA by sending an email with the YES and their contact information. Don't support businesses that don't support you.

A clergy group to support the ERA has been started by an evangelical minister so if you know of any clergy member from any faith who supports, have them contact the ERA Task Force.

If the ERA Task Force can send a speaker to your group or you can host a gathering, let them know. Check out the website and facebook page for contacts and information. It's your equality after all. ERAtaskforceaz.com

UPDATES

In the U.S. legislature, HR748, the $2.2 trillion corona package, was sent to the Senate and passed 96-0. Needless to say, both McSally and Sinema voted Yes. A Republican amendment that would have prevented laid off workers from getting more in unemployment than their salary was defeated with McSally voting Yes and Sinema voting No.

Given the possibility of no future public hearings, it is even more important now that you are signed up for Request to Speak (RTS) and if not, use your representative's email address for communication. The phone works well too and is actually a step up in impact from an email.

CONTACT LIST

When the bill is in a committee, the person to contact is the committee chair and if your representative or senator is on that committee, contact her/him too. When the bill gets to the floor, the person to contact is your own Senator or Representatives. Once a bill passes both houses, the person to contact is the governor. (The ERA does not need the governor's signature.)
